Prices are up – and staying up. Home sales are down… and staying down – at least for now. And if you were luck enough to be one of the millions of people that locked in those amazing interest rates, well, you’re probably not moving unless you have to.

All in all, this recent “era” is a bummer.

I’ve grown accustomed to living in a city with an upward financial trajectory. As a former single mom, I poured heart, soul and money into my home thinking of it was my “retirement plan.”.  In fact, my investment paid off when I sold the house after my kids flew the coop and Houston somehow continues to be a wonderful place to invest in real estate – despite the financial downturn! In times of recession (or fear), many folks decide to stay put and their “starter home” becomes the perfect place to weather the storm. For others, their “big house”, becomes an unnecessary burden. These dynamics cause ripples in the home market and activity as some sell, others downsize, and many renovate.  Not to mention the continued (though smaller) influx of folks coming back to their senses by cashing out on their west coast homes to set up right here in Houston!

What it all means is that this is a great time to renovate or even add square footage to a home in Houston.  In fact, many things will be more affordable as the cost of services makes an adjustment to the new economy. Keeping your investment maintained and attractive to buyers is a way to maintain your sense of security – not to mention your lifestyle as we return to weekend nights at home in lieu of expensive entertainment because after all, many of us are living in our biggest nest egg. Moving forward? If the **** hits the fan, there will be many ready to take advantage of homes hitting the market, and keeping your home up-to-date and beautiful not only keeps your future flexible, it can also make you happier every day!
